This is a short visual effects test I did in December 2011. I wanted to try and incorporate a tutorial I found at VideoCopilot into a complicated scene which involved a moving camera, and made it necessary to motion track the footage. I included a short visual effects breakdown towards the end in the credits.

In addition, I wanted to try and recreate the Sherlock Holmes style credits where the live action footage "melts" into the sketch or artistic representation of the scene. Now that I look back in it, this credit sequence was very rudimentary, but provided a good starting point as this was my first big project getting back into Adobe After Effects.

I know the acting is subpar. It was a cold miserable day, and my cousins were not happy about standing outside for any extended time.

Programs used: After Effects, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro 7
Camera: Canon XA10

This is the end credit sequence I made for my group's 48 Hour Shootout film at Ohio University. It alluded to social media (namely Facebook), so I designed the credits to reflect the film's overall theme.

This took several hours to make, but it felt good to get it done over the course of a weekend.

Here is the rough edit of the film. It is currently being re-edited without the time limits of the 48 Hour Shootout, and so that the audio can get cleaned up.

Fun Fact: In addition to doing the credits, you can also spot me as an extra in several of the scenes. Sometimes I even magically transport from one location in the Cafe to another.

Program: After Effects

This is the DVD intro sequence I created for the DVD of Chardon High School’s production of The Wizard of Oz. I wanted to create an opening sequence that incorporated live elements from the show, as well as appropriately reflected on the events of past months.

The problem here was getting the clips to fly together like a puzzle to form the ribbon, so I started at the end and worked backwards. I overlayed the image of the ribbon with those from the show, and began drawing my masks so that they formed the overall shape of the ribbon. I then set keyframes for all of the images’ positions, and key framed them to start forward in z-space, so that their stopping point was in the shape of the ribbon. It was then as easy as keyframing the opacity of the ribbon and fading out the layers of live images.

This took around 2 days and about 10 hours of continuous work to complete (not including render times). I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Simply put, my favorite TV show is Fringe. I also love the title sequence that plays at the beginning of every episode.

One evening I was sitting in the library, opened After Effects on my laptop, and began what was to become a couple months of learning and hopeful anticipation!

This project went through so many stages of evolution before it reached its current form. When I started it in the library, I was so excited I took this screenshot.

<img src="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/424314_10150748210401982_678126981_12471318_1396902430_n.jpg" width="670" height="369" width_o="762" height_o="420" src_o="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/424314_10150748210401982_678126981_12471318_1396902430_n_o.jpg" data-mid="17218710" border="0" align="left"/>

Further along, I played with different color schemes.

<img src="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/395813_10150753468326982_678126981_12483751_704204880_n.jpg" width="670" height="380" width_o="895" height_o="507" src_o="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/395813_10150753468326982_678126981_12483751_704204880_n_o.jpg" data-mid="17218709" border="0" align="left"/>

And got really excited when I composited my first Cinema 4D elements into After Effects

<img src="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/431613_10150776981321982_678126981_12549262_565346824_n.jpg" width="670" height="372" width_o="848" height_o="471" src_o="http://payload51.cargocollective.com/1/7/236188/3331523/431613_10150776981321982_678126981_12549262_565346824_n_o.jpg" data-mid="17218711" border="0" align="left"/>

And finally, I had what I considered a finished video, until I went back and fixed several elements (the blob, camera moves, and backgrounds), which ended up making the intro look a LOT better!

Here is a comparison between the original finished video and the final finished video.

Music by JJ Abrams
Original Intro by Andrew Kramer at www.videocopilot.net

Over Spring Break 2013, a crew of Ohio University students traveled to Nashville to make a film for their Advance Narrative Production class. As part of the crew, my job was to shoot behind the scenes footage. We had a blast.

This segment is the result of several hours of raw footage and about a week of editing time.

Filmed with Canon t4i, Canon XA10 (mounted on a SteadyVid Pro), and a GoPro

Note: At the time of the trip, the working title for the film was How John Boscoe Outsung the Devil. The film has since been renamed to Asleep in the Deep

Recently, the team at Sway The Crowd created a commercial for 5 Hour Energy via a Poptent.net competition. There were over 130 submissions in total, and our commercial was one of 4 purchased by 5 Hour Energy for their online ad campaign.

This was a fun day on set, and some tedious rotoscoping and greenscreen cloning work. We definitely learned a lot about what not to do for onset greenscreen production.
